The Perfect Showstopping Light

I had the fantastic opportunity to search for new sources and products on a trip to London this month. One of my very favorite things to shop for is lighting, and I found so many great designs! Selecting the perfect light to crown a room is really important. So what do I look for? Here are some ideas when you’re shopping for lighting to place in your home!

Look for Something Different

I like to look for handmade or artisan lighting - something you just won’t see anywhere else. It could be handblown glass, handcrafted metal, or even a fabulous seashell design. Find galleries and artisans that can offer something no one else has!

Offer a Moment of Whimsy

I like opposites. I will pair traditional furnishings with modern art. I love dark navy walls with citrus lemon upholstery. So if you have a classic or very tailored room, add a bit of whimsy or fun with your lighting. It’s a moment to say “wow” when guests and family walk in the door.

Add Some Texture

Texture is SO important to a room’s design - but people usually think that only applies to a rug, upholstery, or even pillows. But offering texture in the light fixture is so key, too. In the room above, I used a rope-wrapped pendant to complement the seaside location of the home.

Be Quietly Complementary

Lighting can be just as beautiful when it is quietly playing a supporting role. In the dining room above, I used a fixture that offers a great counterpoint to the upholstery and the wallcovering. That doesn’t mean it blends into the background! It is just making a quieter statement.

Or Go Bold

The dramatic chandelier I chose for a luxe spa above was a perfect choice for what I wanted to convey. The light fixture says glam, luxury, and movement like water. Lighting can be like art - it can be the star of your room. So don’t be afraid of that!

Repeat the Idea

Taking a great fixture and repeating it is a fantastic way to make the most of a good thing. Use repeating designs in a hallway or a large room to create a gorgeous impact.
