4 Tips for Window Treatments
There are so many ways to cover your windows - or not. With all the options of fabrics, drapes, shades, blinds, and more, it can be difficult to decide exactly what you want on your windows. But I have 4 pro tips that help my clients to choose wisely when it comes to their windows. Check them out!
1. Dare to Go Bare
Did that catch you off guard?? Yes, I often recommend that my clients leave their windows bare, but there are parameters to this decision. The windows have to be beautiful and they have to frame a gorgeous view. You also want to consider your privacy - this is obviously an easier selection when you’re talking about a living room or a kitchen. You probably wouldn’t do this in a bedroom or bathroom. In the room I designed above, though, there was no way I was going to cover up the stunning windows! And in the kitchen below, those unadorned windows look out to the sea - and my clients loved that view too much to cover it.
2. Keep It Simple
This is really one of my favorite ways to dress a window, with simple draperies that offer privacy but also don’t compete for attention. You could use sheers in a public space, or back the curtains with blackout fabric to keep light out of a bedroom. To create height, I always hang the panels right to the ceiling or the ceiling molding. You can see that in the living room I designed below.
3. Blinds and Shades
There are those rooms that don’t need full drapes, like in bathrooms or kitchens. I love to use shutter blinds in bathrooms. They offer a lot of privacy, but they don’t take away from the spa-like atmosphere. And in kitchens, where you often have shorter windows, shades in gorgeous fabrics are a great choice. They can be removed and washed easily, which makes the right selection in a room that has a lot of cooking oils and splatters.
4. Dress It Up
In more formal settings, some of my clients like to make more of a statement with their window treatments. And with the return of traditional, this is fast becoming a more popular look. These draperies include panels and valences, or swoops of fabric across the top of the window. It’s a grand statement that draws the eye into the room.
Which of these window ideas is your favorite? Let me know in the comments section below!
Warmly,
